Men's Over 60's Pairs S/F & Final
Over 60s Mens Pairs
The over 60s mens pairs semis and finals were held at Bareena on Sunday in ideal conditions for bowls. Both semis were of a high standard and decided by the narrowest of margins
In semifinal 1 Lance Kelly and Rod Day City of Geelong met Rick Nichol and Jeff Chandler from Clifton Springs. In a tight contest where all 4 bowlers played well there was never any margin in this game with Chandler and Nichol getting home by 1 shot 15/14
In Semifinal 2 Torquay’s Tim Jenkinson and Rob Chambers were drawn against St Leonards David Rudge and Ron Pickett .Again no easy shots given away and no side able to take control of the match. This match went right to the wire with the Rudge Combination just being able to be steady at the right times winning 13/12
The final between David Rudge/ Ron Pickett and Jeff Chandler/ Rick Nichol saw the team Rudge get away to real flyer. David Rudge was in excellent touch and leading 8/1 when against the flow of the game Chandler and Nichol picked up a 7 to make it 8 all. Rudge and Pickett regained their focus and got out to 13/9 lead when disaster struck again when Chandler and Nichol gained a well-constructed 5 to push them to the 14/13. Rudge and Pickett worked their way back to lead 17/15 playing the last end again Rick and Jeff were able to pull something out again to get 2 shots and an extra end to be played. In a great end of bowls with both teams having shot at various times Chandler and Nichol were able to grab the Golden shot to claim victory.
We wish Jeff Chandler and Rick Nichol from Clifton Springs all the best when they represent Geelong at Sebastopol on December 13th as the over 60s event goes Statewide .
Women's Over 60's Pairs S/F & Final
Over 60s Womens Pairs
The ladies over 60s pairs after preliminary rounds at St Leonards played their semis and final at Bareena on Sunday. The good conditions were conducive to good bowling.
In semifinal 1 the Ocean grove pair Jean Luke and Lorraine Oliver played Wendy Ballentine and Belinda Koek from Highton. Although Oliver and Luke were never out of the match .The Highton Pair with steady bowling always seemed to be in control, eventually winning 13/9
Semifinal 2 with Coral Milligan leading and Di Monk at skip were matched against the Ocean grove pair of Maureen Brooks and Elaine Price. The Monk combination never really got their A game going and Brooks and Price seemed always to be able to that little bit better anytime the Highton pair looked likely to get back in the game. Price and Brooks winning 19/9.
The final between Price and Brooks and Ballentine and Koek was a great exhibition of steady tight bowling. Belinda Koek was in fine form and gave the Highton combo a great start and with Wendy tidying up or adding when required they never really Price and Brooks into the game. It was a case of anything they could do Belinda and Wendy could do better. Ballentine and Koek running out comfortable winners 14/8
All the best to Wendy and Belinda at Sebastopol on 13/14 of December when the y represent Geelong in the Womens over 60s prs
